Action alert in support of including wilderness protection to the Wild and Scenic Rogue.

RiverAction: Contact your legislators today to protect the wild Rogue

Take action to support the Rogue River Wild and Scenic legislation currently proposed by the Save the Wild Rogue Coalition.  This legislation would protect 40 fish bearing tributaries to the lower Rogue canyon as Wild and Scenic Rivers, buffering them from the immediate and future threats of clear-cut logging, illegal mining and off-road vehicles in the area. It would also protect flows in these tributaries and ensure cold clean water continues to flow into the Rogue River.  The legislation was introduced by Congressman DeFazio and Senator Wyden in June 2009. Currently the legislation introduced in Congress is only for Wild and Scenic Rivers. However, legislation should also include Wilderness protection for some of these areas in the future.

Please help get this legislation through Congress as soon as possible by emailing or writing to Senators Wyden and Merkley, Congressman DeFazio, and your local Congressperson.

Points to Make to Congress:

  • Thank Senator Wyden and Representatives DeFazio, Blumenauer and Wu for their vision and excellent leadership by introducing legislation in June 2009 that would add 143 miles of Rogue tributaries to the Wild and Scenic Rivers system.
  • You support the Lower Rogue Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 2009 (H.R.2890 and S.1271)
  • You would like Congress to act swiftly to secure hearings in the House and Senate for the legislation and work to pass the legislation this year.
  • You would also like Congress to protect the nearly 60,000 acres of roadless lands along the Wild Rogue as Wilderness.
  • Let Congress know how important protecting the Rogue River is to you and how important it is to protect this important part of our nation’s natural heritage.
