NEAR GRANTS PASS, Ore. – Contractors broke through the first section of the nearly 90-year old concrete Savage Rapids Dam Monday.

According to the Bureau of Reclamation’s website, the concrete on the top half of the Rogue River dam is thinner than the lower sections.

New equipment expected to come in Tuesday is designed to deal with heavier concrete removal.

“Everything seems to be on schedule. They’re doing the preliminary work and hopefully sometime this week they’ll really get with the program and start breaking concrete,” says GPID Manager Dan Shephard.

The north-half of the concrete dam will be removed this summer. Work on the south side will begin in the fall, and should be completed by December.
