The fall issue of our Instream newsletter is arriving in mailboxes now, and despite teases the cover photo is an image of a plant, blood vessel, or microbe, it’s actually a portion of the Wild and Scenic stretch of the Rogue River.
Taken by cartographer Daniel Coe, who has designed maps for National Geographic, Atlas Obscura, and American Scientist, the photo utilizes LiDAR technology, an acronym for “light detection and ranging,” which is a remote sensing technique that uses a laser to measure distances and create 3D models of the Earth’s surface. We’re thrilled to have Daniel’s permission to use his photo.
Each issue of Instream is a collaborative effort by the WaterWatch staff to share news and updates on water policy, ongoing legal work, and photos from recent events and presentations, and we again have a packed issue with our fall edition of Instream.
Our 16-page issue includes timely articles on WaterWatch news, successes, and programs, including:
- A summation of our successful campaign to update state groundwater allocation rules, with a word of thanks to everyone who supported WaterWatch’s efforts as we now pivot to ensure updated rules are soundly implemented.
- What’s next for the Klamath River following the end of the largest dam removal in history, with salmon found above the former J.C. Boyle Dam site last week — and what can still be addressed.
- An overview of this summer’s disappointing update of the Columbia River Treaty, and where there may be opportunities for improvement.
- Great opportunities and tips for Oregon trout anglers this fall and winter.
- An update on Winchester Dam and the WaterWatch-led Takelma Creek Barrier Removal Project in this issue’s Water Briefs.
- A two-page spread of photos from our successful 22nd Annual Celebration of Oregon Rivers.
There’s also executive director Neil Brandt’s Stream of Consciousness column and our WaterWatch in the Community section. And as always, previous issues of Instream are available at WaterWatch.org.
We hope you’re able to enjoy our fall 2024 issue of Instream this weekend. Thank you for your ongoing support, and if you prefer to donate online instead of mailing a contribution via the issue’s included remit envelope, you can make a gift to WaterWatch here.
