WaterWatch Southern Oregon program director Jim McCarthy made another appearance on The River Rambler podcast, again with Kirk Blaine of the Native Fish Society and Steamboaters, to discuss the ongoing WaterWatch-led campaign to remove Winchester Dam from the North Umpqua River. Jim and Kirk discuss unfinished repairs to the dam from last summer’s calamitous work on the 134-year old structure, the added danger as a result, the state’s seriousness over the dam’s status and proposed action, the many violations the dam’s owners with the Winchester Water Control District face, the lack of federal action despite serious infractions, the pitiful salmon returns on the North Umpqua due to the dam, the speed at which the dam’s removal removal can return the North Umpqua River to it’s natural state, and what the public can do help.
