WaterWatch Southern Oregon program director Jim McCarthy made another appearance on The River Rambler podcast, again with Kirk Blaine of the Native Fish Society and Steamboaters, to discuss with host Richard C. Harrington the ongoing effort to remove Winchester Dam from the North Umpqua River. The three discuss unfinished repairs to the dam from last summer and the added danger as a result, the state’s seriousness over the dam’s status and proposed action, the many violations the dam’s owners with the Winchester Water Control District face, the lack of federal action despite the serious infractions, pitiful salmon returns on the North Umpqua due to the dam, the speed at which removal can return the river to it’s natural state, and what the public can do help.
